On June 29, 2005, in accordance with the decision of the National Coordination Council of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme, the Camili (Macahel) Valley in the Borcka district of Artvin province was declared Turkiye’s first biosphere reserve by UNESCO. To this day, it remains Turkiye’s first and only biosphere reserve. The Camili (Macahel) Valley is home to rainforests, endemic plant species, the protected pure Caucasian bee race, and 2,747 of the 10,000 plant species found in Turkiye. The existence of untouched forest areas and the polyfloral Macahel forest honey produced by the pure Caucasian bees from this extraordinary flora at altitudes between 500 and 1,600 meters are a testament to this unique environment. The content, texture, aroma, taste, and antioxidant properties of this honey are a reflection of the pristine, unspoiled, unpolluted, and well-preserved rich nature. The absence of artificial beeswax and the use of natural methods in agriculture without any chemical products are the results and rewards of this exceptional ecosystem.
